Released on March 13, ‘SPIRIT OF THE ANZACS’, the remarkable new album from Lee Kernaghan & Special Guests, which honours the 100th anniversary of the Gallipoli landing. The album has moved up from last week’s ARIA #2 debut position to claim the ARIA Album Chart #1 spot, overcoming a host of international and domestic releases with one of the strongest second week sales of the year. ARIA has also certified that the album has gone GOLD after only two weeks of sales.
‘Spirit Of The Anzacs’ features a diverse array of stars across the musical spectrum including Lisa McCune, John Schumann, Sara Storer, Fred Smith and VC recipient Ben Robert Smith. Superstars Guy Sebastian, Jessica Mauboy, Sheppard, Jon Stevens, Shannon Noll and Megan Washington donated their time and talents to the ‘Spirit Of The Anzacs’ charity song and video with all proceeds going to Legacy Australia and Soldier On.
“This is some of the most powerful material that I’ve ever had the privilege to record in my career”, Lee said.
“The album takes you on a real journey, from the trenches of the Western Front to the bombing of Darwin, Kokoda, Long Tan, and the dust of Uruzgan Province in Afghanistan. It is a project that goes to the heart of who we are as a nation.”
The venture was initially inspired by letters held at the Australian War Memorial.
Dr Brendan Nelson, Director, Australian War Memorial, said ‘every nation has its story – this is ours’.
“From the bloody Gallipoli landing to the dusty deserts of Afghanistan, precious war letters held at the Australian War Memorial have inspired this moving tribute from one of Australia’s great story tellers, Lee Kernaghan,’’ Dr Nelson said.
“The spirit of the men and women who wrote them, their courage and sacrifice lives in these songs – and in us.”
Proceeds from the sales of the album go to Legacy*. The album has inspired the ‘Spirit of the Anzacs’ Arena Spectacular.
Set against a giant digital screen backdrop and inspired by the personal letters of soldiers and their loved ones, this arena spectacular will feature some of our finest singers and actors including Lee Kernaghan, Jack Thompson, Lisa McCune, Jack Jones, John Schumann, Harrison Craig and Fred Smith. Supported by an 11 piece orchestra plus a children’s choir, SPIRIT OF THE ANZACS is a show for all Australians and New Zealanders.
Tickets are on sale now. The tour runs throughout Australia in August and September.
*Legacy is a charity providing services to Australian families suffering financially and socially after the incapacitation or death of a spouse or parent, during or after their defence force service. They currently care for around 90,000 widows and 1,900 children and disabled dependants throughout Australia.”
